Phil Collins on Facing Noel and Liam Gallagher at the Rock Hall: “I’m Soft as a Person”

Phil Collins thinks a pre-ceremony lunch could be his chance to bury the hatchet with Noel and Liam Gallagher ahead of their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction this November. The event will place the Genesis legend and the Oasis brothers in close quarters for the first time after a feud that dates back to the 1990s.

“I’m soft as a person. Musically, I’m not edgy. I would be everything that Noel and Liam would probably dislike. So, I understand it,” Collins said. “But it’s got a life of its own now. So, yeah, we’ll see.”

“There’s a lunch that happens before the ceremony. Just the inductees and a guest,” Collins said. “So I will get a chance to be in a small room with them.”

He says he holds no grudge against the brothers and half-expects them to act like the whole thing never happened. “The whole thing [feud] has got to comical levels,” he said.

Noel’s jabs over the years included branding Collins “the antichrist of music.” Back in 1994, he took aim at both Collins and Sting, writing off their output as “junk food music” and “McDonald’s music.” He also said: “I want the severed head of Phil Collins in my fridge by the end of this decade. And if I haven’t, I’ll be a failure.”

The hostility spilled into politics in 1997, when Noel urged people to vote Labour. “If the Conservatives get in, Phil Collins is threatening to come back and live here. And let’s face it, none of us want that,” he said, a reference to Collins having relocated to Switzerland.

Collins, for his part, described Oasis as “rude” and “horrible.” His daughter, actress Lily Collins, reportedly confronted Liam backstage at the Live Earth charity concert in 2007, when she was still a teenager.

She’s said to have asked, “Why do you hate my dad?” Liam reportedly answered: “I don’t hate anybody, love.”

Noel later claimed Collins’ kids had confused Liam for him. Recounting the confrontation, he said: “When I heard about it I thought: ‘I really hope someone filmed it.’”
