Sophia Bush says the anniversary post wasn’t the happy milestone it looked like. On the October 21 episode of Call Her Daddy, she said that by the time she celebrated a year married to Grant Hughes online, she’d already told her best friend she couldn’t stay in the marriage.

Then came the math she did in her head. “If I don’t celebrate this, the internet’s gonna come for me,” she recalled thinking, “and if by some magical measure we work through it, it’ll be messy forever.” So she posted.

She described the performance that followed: keeping up appearances while not sleeping in the same bed, living on separate floors of the house, her parents knowing she was miserable and not sleeping at all.

Bush and Hughes married on June 11, 2022, at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa. Court papers later listed June 27, 2023 as their separation date, 16 days after their first wedding anniversary, and she filed citing irreconcilable differences that August. The divorce settled confidentially in December 2024.

What struck her, she said, was how many people around her were living the same way. Her first instinct wasn’t relief. “What does everybody need? Let me connect everybody,” she said, describing a friend going through it with a toddler who needed a lawyer and an apartment, and offering up her own Amazon list for kitchen utensils.
