Former Scientologist and Sea Org member Anne Gollert Hill says the church assigned a team of people to break up Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

Hill made the claim on the October 15, 2026 episode of Jenny McCarthy’s show, recalling a push inside Scientology to pull Cruise away from Kidman and back toward the church.

“She was pulling him. He wasn’t as dedicated a Scientologist. And Miscavige didn’t like that, so he put together a team of people who worked very diligently to get Tom back in the fold. And part of that meant to get him to see how Nicole was not good for him because her father was a psychologist, and you know, psychology and psychiatry are the scourge of mankind.”

She says church leadership saw Kidman as a problem because Cruise “wasn’t as dedicated a Scientologist” while they were together. The fix, as she describes it, was a group of people assigned “to get him to see how Nicole was not good for him.”

Part of the case against Kidman, by Hill’s account, was her father. Antony Kidman was an Australian clinical psychologist, and Scientology treats psychology and psychiatry as, in her words, “the scourge of mankind.”

Former church executives have told versions of this for years. Marty Rathbun said he “participated in the Nic divorce” and that David Miscavige “was integral to the breakup of the marriages.” Mike Rinder has said that once Kidman was seen as a liability, she “had to be gotten rid of” and Cruise “had to disconnect from her.”

Cruise and Kidman married on Christmas Eve 1990 and announced their separation on February 5, 2001, citing “divergent careers.” The divorce was finalized that August.

Church attorneys have categorically denied that Miscavige was involved in the breakup or that Kidman was labeled a Suppressive Person.

Kidman has said little publicly, telling Ladies’ Home Journal in 2006 the split was a “major shock” and adding, “I loved him. I still love him.”
