Devon Sawa has made peace with the “Casper” line that has followed him for decades. In an interview published this month, the actor reflected on his breakout role and the scene fans never forgot. “Doesn’t matter what I do nowadays,” he said. “I will always have to say, ‘Can I keep you?’ to somebody at some point.”

The line lands near the end of the 1995 film “Casper,” when the friendly ghost gets turned human for one night so he can dance with Kat, the 13-year-old who moved into Whipstaff Manor with her widowed dad. Devon Sawa plays the human version, looks at Christina Ricci’s Kat, and asks, “Can I keep you?” before he kisses her and turns back into a ghost.

The movie opened number one over Memorial Day weekend and has grossed about $290 million worldwide. The dance plays to Jordan Hill’s “Remember Me This Way,” and in 2011 HuffPost called it “the most romantic Halloween teen moment in all of cinematic history.”
Sawa spent years trying to outrun the role. He told The Independent he “had to smoke pot in movies and be in a hip-hop video” to get away from it, and admitted there was a stretch where he thought, “I don’t wanna talk about Casper. How dare you? I’m a thespian.”
He’s made his peace with it now.
