John Stamos on Bob Saget Showing Up at His Hospital Bedside: “He Showed Up and He Loved Me.”

John Stamos accepted the Bob Saget Legacy Award on Oct. 13 at the Scleroderma Research Foundation’s Cool Comedy – Hot Cuisine fundraiser, held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, and used the moment to remember how Saget showed up for him at one of his lowest points.

“But that night Bob was as close to an angel as I’ve ever known. No judgment, no lecture, just concern and love,” Stamos, 63, said. “He showed up and he loved me. That’s who Bob was.”

Stamos was supposed to meet Saget for dinner in 2015 when a DUI arrest landed him in the hospital. When he woke up, Saget was at his bedside.

“And in 2015, I was at the lowest point in my life. One night I was on my way to meet Bob at the Palm and I got arrested for a DUI and I ended up in the hospital. And when I woke up, I saw a bright light and there was a figure standing over me,” Stamos said.

He briefly thought he’d died and was seeing God. Then he recognized his friend and found room for a joke: “And knowing Bob the way I do, I immediately checked to see if my zipper was down.”

In July 2015, after the arrest, Stamos entered a 30-day substance abuse treatment program. He later wrote about his alcohol addiction and recovery in his 2023 memoir, If You Would Have Told Me.

Saget also supported him through the deaths of his parents. “He was there when my life fell apart and he was there when my life finally came back together,” Stamos said.

Their Full House co-stars Candace Cameron Bure, Lori Loughlin and Jodie Sweetin attended the fundraiser. Saget, who died in January 2022 at 65, had spent years supporting the foundation after his sister Gay died from systemic scleroderma in 1994 at 47. The autoimmune disease can harden and tighten skin and damage internal organs.

“I know that sounds simple, but he didn’t just love people. He made absolute sure that they knew it, whether they wanted to know it or not,” Stamos said.
