What Jennifer Lawrence Said About Her Body and Hollywood, and Why It Still Resonates

“I’d rather look a little chubby on camera and look like a person in real life.” — Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence was 20 and had just been cast as Katniss Everdeen when she told FLARE magazine she was done with the industry’s idea of a leading lady’s body. “I don’t really diet or anything. I’m miserable when I’m dieting and I like the way I look,” she said in the June 2011 issue. “I’m really sick of all these actresses looking like birds.”

She was already carrying the weight of early-career body pressure. Producers had told her to drop 15 pounds in two weeks or risk being fired, and she later described being put in a nude lineup with much thinner women and told to use the photos as diet inspiration. In a 2017 speech she called the experience “degrading and humiliating.”

The 2011 line kept coming. The next year she told Elle she was “considered a fat actress” in Hollywood and refused to starve for a role so young girls wouldn’t skip dinner to look like Katniss. By 2013 she was telling Harper’s Bazaar that if anybody even whispered the word diet, “You can go f—k yourself.”

The irony arrived on the same cover. In late 2013, GIFs of that 2011 FLARE shoot showed heavy Photoshopping that slimmed her waist, hips and face, airbrushing away the exact body she’d spent the interview defending.

Now 36 and a mother of two, Lawrence hasn’t softened. She filmed ‘Die My Love’ while pregnant, refused to retouch visible cellulite in a nude scene, and has stayed blunt about vanity and the industry’s standards. In the Ozempic era, a 2011 quote about preferring to look like a person reads like it was waiting for this moment.
