Sophia Bush says she was so nervous asking Ashlyn Harris out that Harris had to finish the question for her. On Call Her Daddy, Bush wanted one thing clear about how they got together: there was no drunken slip-up. She said anyone who pictures a casual leap “doesn’t know me,” and that she was too nervous to even get the words out.

She said she finally worked up the nerve at a friend’s event in New York, a stop she’d only made because she was on a layover before leaving the country with her family. Her logic, she said, was that if the answer was no, she could “cry into my mother’s arms for 9 days overseas and come back and pretend this never happened.”

When she tried to ask Harris to get a meal alone, just the two of them and not the whole group, she fumbled it badly. “I’ve never been less cool,” she said.
Harris finally had to spell it out for her: “Are you asking me on a date?” Bush answered, “Yes.”
Bush has described the moment as terrifying, and she hasn’t backed off the point that the timeline rumors miss who she actually is. She and Harris have since married, and the account arrives alongside her memoir And I Will Tell You Mine, out October 27.
