Actress Amanda Seyfried saw a career risk in accepting a role in Guardians of the Galaxy: if audiences rejected its talking animals and space setting, she’d have a flop attached to her name.

“Like they’re talking, the tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. They’re in space,” she said, recalling why she doubted the movie would succeed.

The decision also came down to the working life she wanted. Seyfried was thinking about the family she hoped to have and how much time she’d spend in the makeup trailer. Sitting still is difficult for her, and she dislikes both stunts and heights.

Acting in a world she has to imagine presents another challenge. “I need something to hold on to,” she said.

She acknowledges that her prediction about the film was wrong, but stands by passing on it: “But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself.”
