Maya Hawke still talks about a friendship that ended in high school at least once a month, and sometimes every week. For the 28-year-old Stranger Things actress, losing friends has brought the deepest heartbreak of her life.
She says the possibility of a romantic relationship ending is something people tend to anticipate. Friendship leaves her more exposed: “You go in so vulnerable, and when it doesn’t work, it’s the biggest tears I’ve ever shed.”
Hawke describes herself as a “hopeless romantic,” and that feeling extends to the people she wants to build a life around. “I love them very romantically, like how can we spend Christmas together romantically and familially?” she said of her friends.
The actress, who plays Robin Buckley in Stranger Things, married musician Christian Lee Hutson earlier this year. She described meeting him as a turning point in how she understood falling in love, while saying friendship still brings that feeling into her daily life.
“Until I actually fell in love with my husband, I was falling in love all the time. I fall in love with my friends every day.”
