Ms. Rachel on SNAP Cuts: “You’re Going to Complain About a Child Having Enough Food?”

On the It’s Open podcast with Ilana Glazer, in an episode that dropped September 24, 2026, children’s entertainer Rachel Accurso, beloved by millions as Ms. Rachel, took direct aim at federal food aid cuts. The SNAP fight “just breaks me,” she said, before cutting to the bone: “You’re going to complain about a child having enough food?”

Much of her frustration landed as pointed sarcasm toward politicians pushing a “more Christian nation” who simultaneously slash food assistance, lock immigrants in detention centers, and strip away health coverage. The Bible, she noted, calls for welcoming the stranger, which means the version of Christianity those politicians are selling reads the book backward.

She also had no patience for the argument that SNAP recipients need a government-approved shopping list. Cool Ranch Doritos, birthday cake, whatever they want, they should be able to buy it, she argued, noting she’d had ice cream and cookies for her own dinner the night before. For the record, USDA explicitly lists snack foods as SNAP-eligible, so chips, cookies, and cake are all legal purchases under federal rules.

The stakes behind her words are enormous. A July 2025 law would cut SNAP by nearly $187 billion through 2034, a figure the Congressional Budget Office estimated and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities calls the largest reduction in the program’s history. CBPP’s tracker, updated September 23 and 24, 2026, shows 1.5 million fewer children on SNAP since the law’s passage, drawing on data from the 28 states with usable figures.

This is not Accurso’s first time stepping into the policy arena. She founded Songs for Littles in 2019 and has grown the channel to roughly 21.5 million subscribers. On June 11, 2026, she walked the halls of Capitol Hill delivering letters written by children held at Dilley, the ICE family detention center in Texas.

Clip accounts were already circulating her remarks on social media by that same afternoon.
