Natasha Gregson Wagner was 11 when her mother, Natalie Wood, died, and she pushes back on the idea that Wood was destined for tragedy. Her memories are of a woman who ran her own life: “She was the one in charge. She was strong, very strong.”

Speaking about the idea that Wood was destined for tragedy, Natasha described her mother’s warmth alongside the authority she held at work and at home. “But she was completely in control of her life and enormously powerful as a businesswoman, as a wife, as a mother, and as a friend,” she said.

Wood was 43 when she drowned off California’s Catalina Island in November 1981 during a weekend on the family yacht, Splendour. Nearly 45 years later, Natasha is working to preserve a fuller account of her mother’s life through family letters, an exhibition and her documentary work.

Wood’s career stretched from the 1947 Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street to West Side Story and Gypsy. She earned Oscar nominations for Rebel Without a Cause, Splendor in the Grass and Love with the Proper Stranger.

The investigation into her death has also remained part of the family’s public life. Initially ruled an accident, the case was reopened in 2011. In 2012, the coroner changed the cause of death to “drowning and other undetermined factors.”

Investigators named her husband, Robert Wagner, a person of interest in 2018. He’s denied involvement and has never been charged in connection with her death.

Natasha’s biological father was British producer Richard Gregson. After that marriage, Wood reunited with Wagner in 1972; their earlier marriage had lasted from 1957 to 1962. Wood and Wagner also had a daughter, Courtney.

Natasha said the public scrutiny made her protective of Wagner, her stepfather. “He has been a force of love and protection for me: he raised me as his own daughter and has loved me as if I were his flesh and blood. I know he would have done anything to protect my mother.”

She also warned against treating speculation as fact: “I think it’s reckless and dangerous when people make up lies or make assumptions that end up circulating as if they were the truth.”

Her efforts to share her mother’s life include the 2020 HBO documentary Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, directed by Laurent Bouzereau. California’s Muckenthaler Cultural Center hosted More Than Love, the Life and Art of Natalie Wood in 2026, with her help in organising it. The exhibition included letters, personal belongings and costumes, among them Wood’s white lace dress from West Side Story.

She’s also preparing a book of letters between Wood, Gregson, Wagner and other relatives. Natasha’s stepmother discovered the correspondence after Gregson died in 2019.

Asked what she’d say if she could have 5 more minutes with her mother, Natasha said: “I’d tell her I’ve missed her so much. I’d thank her for making me feel so loved. And I’d tell her I’ve tried to be a good daughter, to take care of my dad and my sister Courtney… and that I wish she hadn’t died.”
