Prince William had a teenage dream before the throne got in the way: he wanted to spin records under the name DJ Xara, spelled with an X at the front.

Making a surprise appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” taped Thursday, October 22, William was asked whether he’d fantasised about doing something other than being king. He admitted there were “elements of that,” then said he was “rapidly trying to think what I can say on television.”

First he wanted to be a policeman. “I did want to be a policeman when I was younger,” he said, adding that he thought he “could make a good policeman” and that it “was quite cool.”

Norton told him he’d look good in the uniform and the hat. William’s reply: “I wasn’t on the catwalk.”

Then came the DJ phase, “which didn’t go very well.” He’d landed on a stage name, DJ Xara, crossing his hands as he described putting the X out front.

Hannah Waddingham called the name “rubbish.” Cate Blanchett asked if the hand cross was “one of your moves,” and William said no, he didn’t do the move, before admitting, “It rapidly became very uncool.”

He never made it to a gig. Asked whether he’d DJ’d at school parties, he said, “No, I didn’t, I never got that good.”

Robert Irwin got a word in too, joking that William could have wrangled crocodiles instead. “If I’d met you earlier, it might have been different,” the prince said.

William, 44, was on the sofa for a special edition tied to his Earthshot Prize, which hands out five ÂŁ1 million awards a year and holds this year’s ceremony in Mumbai on November 17.
