Hulu has ordered a full series of The X-Files from Ryan Coogler, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Sinners. The streamer announced the pickup on Oct. 13, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel leading a new version of the sci-fi drama Chris Carter created.
“What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world,” Coogler said in a statement accompanying the announcement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The story pairs 2 accomplished FBI agents whose differences complicate an unexpected partnership. Their assignment takes them to a division that’s been closed for years, where they’ll investigate unexplained phenomena.

The leads are reportedly new characters, rather than versions of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, played in the original by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny.
Hulu ordered the pilot in February. Coogler wrote and directed it and served as an executive producer; he’ll also executive produce the series alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale. Deadwyler and Patel previously worked together on Station Eleven.
Carter’s involved as an executive producer, along with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, who co-founded Proximity Media with Ryan Coogler. Proximity and 20th Television are producing the series. Deadwyler, Patel and Proximity’s Simone Harris are co-executive producers.
The original ran for 11 seasons on Fox and earned 15 Emmys from 61 nominations. Coogler comes to the series after Sinners received a record 16 Oscar nominations and won 4 awards, including his screenplay Oscar and Michael B. Jordan’s best actor award.
