Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI’s board of trustees, singled out the conviction behind his work: “What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together. That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world.”

His films have earned nearly $13 billion worldwide. Across a career that includes 3 Oscar nominations, Cruise’s credits range from Risky Business and Jerry Maguire to Magnolia and Minority Report, alongside the Top Gun and Mission: Impossible franchises.

Cruise has described that career as an ongoing pursuit of fresh challenges. Asked about being 64, he said: “There’s always a new dream.”

That approach also shapes how he revisits his work. He said he looks back to assess what succeeded and what he could improve, including exploring older lenses to achieve a particular look in new films. As he put it: “I’m not someone who lives in the past.”
