Michael Douglas wanted Hank Pym’s Marvel run to end with a spectacular death. He even pitched shrinking to the size of an ant and exploding, but his character survived all 3 Ant-Man movies.

The 82-year-old actor said on Happy Sad Confused that he’d wanted an exit after his second film: “I would have been killed off after the second one, but they wouldn’t let me.”

Douglas joined the franchise as Pym, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and the original Ant-Man, in 2015. He returned for 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He also voiced Pym in episodes of the animated series What If…? from 2021 to 2023.

The special effects were what drew him to the job. Douglas said he’d asked his agents to find him a green screen movie because he’d never made one and wanted to experience how it worked. Acting against an empty backdrop, with images showing what would eventually appear around him, turned out to be “hard acting,” he said.

He praised Paul Rudd as “a wonderful actor” and called the cast “lovely,” while joking that he should’ve read his contract’s fine print.

During a 2024 appearance on The View, Douglas said he’d requested a death scene for the third Ant-Man film and wanted the effects team to go all out: “There’s got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects.”
